PROJECT HEAD START 1965...

Email me at ggibson@jhsph.edu if you taught or attended Head Start in 1965?

We are recognizing that poverty perpetrates itself. Five- and 6-year-old children are inheritors of the poverty curse--not its creators. Unless we act, these children will pass it on to the next generation--like a family birthmark.

--President Lyndon B. Johnson, at a White House ceremony May 18, 1965, launching Project Head Start.

Head Start Stories

Miss Gibson's guys in 1965.
H. D. Cooke Elementary School
17th & Euclid Streets, NW

... They were a lively bunch of young men - lots of fun, always on the run, and as you can see, loving to bask in the sun.  I had one teacher's aide and together we planned daily activities that included singing, marching, and guessing games.  Believe me, three hours always felt like five and we tried to cram as much as we could into them and the children, so life would be good "in the hood" for all of us.

... I would like to hear from anyone who worked at H. D. Cooke in the summer of 1965, as well as students and parents.  Your stories are welcomed.  Here's our eight week program.
